A practical FD calculator for Indian fixed deposits

This FD interest calculator helps you compare the effect of deposit amount, annual interest rate, tenure and payout choice before opening a fixed deposit. It works as an online FD calculator for bank deposits and Post Office estimates because you control the rate used in the calculation. You can test a small deposit, a large lump sum or a renewal scenario without creating an account or sending your inputs to a server.

Choose Cumulative when you want interest to compound and be paid at maturity. Choose Monthly payout or Quarterly payout when regular income matters more than the largest maturity value. The result separates principal from interest, shows the rate used and estimates the maturity date so you can compare offers with the same assumptions.

The tool is provider-neutral. That makes it useful for an initial comparison, but it also means the rate is only as reliable as the rate you enter. Bank and Post Office products can differ in compounding rules, minimum deposits, senior citizen premiums, premature closure rules and tax treatment. Confirm those details with the provider before making an investment decision.

Use the interest calculator when you want to isolate the gross return from a deposit, then use the maturity result to see how the same assumptions behave over time. Keeping those two views together makes an online FD calculator more useful for comparing a bank offer, a Post Office term deposit and a renewal plan.

How FD interest is calculated

For a cumulative fixed deposit, the calculator uses compound interest with the compounding frequency selected in the form. The general formula is:

A = P (1 + r / n) ^ (n x t)

P is the principal, r is the annual rate as a decimal, n is the number of compounding periods per year and t is the tenure in years. For monthly or quarterly payout estimates, the calculator uses simple pro-rata interest for the selected payout period. Actual products may use different day-count conventions, payout dates, minimums, premature-closure rules or tax treatment.

Example FD calculation

Example input: INR 100,000 deposit | 7% annual rate | 2 years | CumulativeTry the same inputs in the calculator above, then switch to Monthly payout to compare cash flow with maturity growth.

The calculator performs the arithmetic in your browser, so you can change one input and compare the result immediately. Use a provider's quoted rate rather than a generic rate when you are checking a real product. The example is for understanding the workflow, not a promise of any bank's current return.

Important FD calculator limitations

Use this FD calculator to compare like-for-like scenarios: keep the principal and tenure the same while changing the rate or payout mode. A high displayed maturity amount is not automatically the best choice if you need access to the money before the term ends. Liquidity, provider reliability, deposit insurance rules, taxation and your own cash-flow needs matter alongside the arithmetic.

When you have a specific product in mind, copy its rate, compounding convention and payout instruction into the tool. Then compare the result with the official illustration. If the two numbers differ, the official provider document should take priority. This page is designed to make assumptions visible and calculations quick, not to replace account terms or personal financial advice.

The displayed amount is a gross estimate before TDS, income tax, fees and premature-closure adjustments. If a senior-citizen or special-tenure rate applies, enter the rate that actually matches your eligibility instead of using a typical premium. A promotional rate may not apply to every deposit type or term.

For an audit-friendly comparison, record principal, annual rate, tenure, compounding frequency, payout mode and the date on which the rate was checked. Change one input at a time so you can tell whether a difference comes from the amount, term, rate or payment schedule.

If you are planning monthly household income, compare the estimated payout with your expected expenses and test a lower-rate scenario as well. A monthly payout is not a guaranteed salary. Check the tax treatment, payment date and what happens to principal after maturity before relying on the figure.

Bank and Post Office products may use the same basic formula but different eligibility, documentation, renewal, payout and early-closure rules. Confirm the current rate and effective period from the official source before treating an estimate as an investment input.

FD calculator FAQ

What is an FD interest calculator?

An FD interest calculator estimates the interest earned and maturity amount from a fixed deposit using your principal, annual rate, tenure and payout option.

Can I use this as an online FD calculator for any bank?

Yes. Enter the annual rate and rules quoted by the bank or Post Office. The calculator is provider-neutral, so verify the final result against the institution's current terms.

How do I calculate monthly FD interest?

Choose Monthly payout, enter the deposit amount and annual rate, then calculate. The result gives an estimated monthly interest payout and total interest for the selected tenure.

Does the FD calculator include senior citizen rates?

The tool lets you identify a senior citizen scenario, but enter the actual senior citizen rate offered by the provider rather than assuming a fixed premium.

Does the result include TDS or income tax?

No. The displayed result is a gross estimate before TDS, income tax, provider fees and premature-closure adjustments.

Is the FD maturity amount guaranteed?

No. It is a calculation based on your inputs. The provider's application terms, rate, compounding convention, tax treatment and account instructions control the final amount.

What is the difference between cumulative and monthly payout FD?

Cumulative FD generally keeps the interest invested until maturity, while monthly payout FD distributes estimated interest during the term. The best choice depends on whether you need income now or growth later.

Can I calculate a Post Office FD with this tool?

Yes, if you enter the applicable Post Office rate and tenure. For a focused workflow, use the Post Office FD Calculator page and confirm current rates before investing.
